Shiatsu is also applied to horses and dogs. Painful muscles in the back, neck and hindquarters are released through a number of special techniques. Problems with nutrition, intestinal function, too much energy or lack of energy are also addressed.
Before the treatment, the animal is listened to and observed, and only then is it decided which meridians to address; during the treatment, an intuitively different course may also be taken, depending on the animal’s reaction.
The energy channels (meridians) are connected to the organs, fascia, etc. of the body and at the same time to behaviour, emotions and mental state. By pressing on specific acupuncture points of the meridians, kneading the skin, and making connections between points, physical and mental improvement in the horse or dog is achieved.
Since the treatment releases many waste products in the horse’s body, the horse/dog may be somewhat stiffer or more tired in the first 2 or 3 days after treatment. Movement in the form of lunging and grazing is certainly recommended.
Shiatsu can be applied both preventively and curatively. The animal would benefit from a maintenance treatment approximately every 6 weeks.
